For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, you must reserve a seat many months in advance at Chef Gaggan Anand’s two Michelin star restaurant Gaggan, named after himself. At the 14-person U-shaped table surrounding these top chefs at work, an intimate 25-course rapid-fire meal awaits in a style unique to Gaggan.
Gaggan made the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for four consecutive years from 2014-2018 and was ranked as the 5th best restaurant in the world and the best restaurant in Asia in 2018. By combining traditional Indian cuisine and modern savoir-faire, Gaggan strives to heighten the reputation of Indian food. Studying under world-renowned chef Ferran Adrià of elBulli, Gaggan uses molecular gastronomy techniques to create mouth-watering dishes.
The dishes have playful textures, colors and combinations of many different types of foods. The 25-course emoji-themed tasting menu presented at your seat has solely a vertical line of 25 emojis with no descriptions, but the courses prepared are nothing like you would expect. One course (emoji: a tongue sticking out) is called “Lick It Up,” where you, literally, lick the plate clean of mushroom and pea puree. His most famous dish is the “Yogurt Explosion” (emoji: orange and red burst)- it looks like a soft-boiled egg but explodes in your mouth to expose flavors of yogurt and curry.
Impressive, enjoyable and unforgettable, Gaggan in Bangkok has one of the most unique dining experiences in the world. He strives to surprise people and in 2016, true to fashion, Gaggan announced that he is closing this restaurant in 2020. If you want to make a reservation, you might have to compete with everyone else trying to get a seat to lick their plate.
